Harald Stein

Harald Stein is Emeritus Professor of the Charité University
Medicine Berlin. Currently he is chairman of the Berlin Re-
ference Center for Lymphoma- and Haematopathology and
director of the Institute for Pathodiagnostik Berlin.
His scientific findings include the discovery of histiocytic lym-
phomas being derived from B cells, the proliferation marker
molecule Ki-67, the Hodgkin lymphoma most characteristic
cytokine receptor CD30, the description of three new lympho-
ma diseases anaplastic large cell lymphoma, plasmablastic
lymphoma and nodular B-cell rich classical Hodgkin lymphoma. He contributed to the finding
that the dysplastic cells of Hodgkin lymphoma are monoclonal expansions of B cells.
Together with Peter Isaacson he founded in 1991 the International Lymphoma Study Group
(ILSG) by bringing 19 internationally known experts in haematopathology together which re-
sulted in a close cooperation between the old and new world and finally in a worldwide used
lymphoma classification published by the WHO in 2001 and updated in 2008.
