Brief Description of the ESP
The European Society of Pathology (ESP)
was established in 1963 in Brussels and is
a leading force in European pathology and,
as such, is pivotal to the future of the spe-
cialty in Europe and beyond. As a scientific
society, the ESP has, as its primary aim, the
promotion of high quality diagnostic prac-
tice, applied and translational research and
under- and postgraduate education in the
field of human pathology. This is achieved
through its congresses, its journal Virchows
Archiv and various other activities. The ESP
interacts with national pathology societies in
Europe and has developed links with other
EU bodies in close collaboration with UEMS
(Union Européenne des Médecins Spécial-
istes) and EAPCP (European Association of
Pathology Chairs and Programme Directors).
The European School of Pathology under the
auspices of the ESP and with the support of
19 Working Groups representing different
fields of pathology is involved in the organi-
sation of courses to meet the needs of young
pathologists. The ESP also provides an in-
frastructure for quality assurance projects in
diagnostic molecular pathology, such as the
ESP QA KRAS project for testing of colorectal
cancer.

Brief Description of
The Pathological Society
The Pathological Society of Great Britain and
Ireland, founded in 1906, is the professional
organisation supporting academic pathol-
ogy in the UK and is dedicated to enhanc-
ing high quality research and education in
pathology in its broadest sense. The stated
focus and mission of the Pathological Society
is to promote the understanding of disease
and the Society actively engages with other
organisations and in partnership to develop
programmes to achieve this goal. We are de-
lighted that Understanding Disease has been
adopted as the motto of London 2014 our
joint meeting with the European Society of
Pathology. Membership of the Society, often
referred to as Path Soc, is open to all indi-
viduals involved in pathological research and
education and includes the option of a sub-
scription to our Society Journal. The Journal
of Pathology is one of the foremost and high-
est impact journals in the field.
Path Soc currently hosts a major conference
twice a year with outstanding speakers on a
range of topics from basic molecular pathol-
ogy to diagnostic practice and provides a
forum for investigators across the world to
present their research. The Society also has
a generous range of grants that it awards to
its members including PhD studentships,
scholarships and travel support. It aims to
facilitate future high quality research, by de-
veloping programmes for undergraduate and
postgraduate teaching, and by engaging with
the general public.
